FireSmart - Wildfire Risk Management
Protecting your Property from Wildfires
Alpine Precision provides FireSmart wildfire risk management and vegetation management services for homes, businesses and government clients throughout Canmore, Banff, Lake Louise, Kananaskis and the Bow Valley. Our process begins with consultation and the development of an action plan to help reduce risk, applying Alberta FireSmart Principles to your unique scenario.
Alpine Precision works closely with municipalities and larger commercial clients to monitor forest conditions and limit the potential intensity and spread of wildfires through Fire Guards. Our experience includes multiple FireSmart and fuel-reduction projects for the Town of Canmore, the Government of Alberta and the MD of Bighorn.
Applying Canadian FireSmart Principles
FireSmart planning focuses on the Home Ignition Zone, the area within 30 metres of a home or structure. Work begins closest to the building and moves outward based on three priority zones:
Immediate Zone: 0–1.5 metres
Remove combustible vegetation, woody debris and other materials that could allow wind-blown embers to ignite near the structure.
Intermediate Zone: 1.5–10 metres
Manage trees and shrubs, remove dead vegetation and reduce continuous pathways that could carry fire toward the building.
Extended Zone: 10–30 metres
Reduce potential fire intensity by selectively thinning, spacing conifer tree crowns to 3m, pruning lower branches 2m above th ground and managing surface fuels such as deadfall, needles and dry vegetation.
FireSmart Alberta recommends starting in the Immediate Zone and working outward.

Establishing the value of trees is fundamental to arboriculture and our urban forests Without an estimate of tree value, there is little to motivate investment in tree protection and management. When trees are viewed more as liabilities than assets, they are removed and too often not replaced. As tree canopy cover diminishes, our communities become less livable. Recent advances in tree valuation make it possible to develop reasonable estimates of the benefits trees do and will produce.
Under the Town of Canmore’s recent creation of the ‘Tree Protection Bylaw’, it’s now more important than ever to understand the importance of Tree Appraisals. We know your project has time limits, and we want to help you get things rolling as quickly as possible. Any tree on town land being considered for removal for development must be valuated by an arborist using the Trunk Formula Method.
